Intro: Gary Montgomery

Speaker(s): Deputy Aaron Fisher of US Marshal Service, and Ron Sherman, Investigator, Ohio State Fire Marshal Office , both of which are Canine Handlers.

Highlights:

  • Aaron's canine companion/officer is Marion, and Ron's canine companion/office is Dodger.
  • Both agencies partner with other agencies, such as the ATF & JTF.
  • Their canines are specialized in detecting explosives.  Therefore, they are trained to sniff out different chemicals & materials than "bomb-sniffing dogs" do.
  • Mario & Dodger are both on the "food reward" system of training, as opposed to the "toy reward" system.  They are feed only by the hand of their handlers, and only in direct connection with their behavior & performance.
  • Hunting breed dogs seem to work the best for detecting explosives, etc. by scent.
  • They can be trained to refine their detection abilities to discover even gun residue on suspects or remnants in a post-blast scene.
  • They shared some of the K-9 success stories.
  • Highly specialized training program lasts 10 weeks, 7days per week.
  • K-9's have a mandatory 10-year retirement limit.
  • K-9's are also used to search people before they enter buildings, such as courthouses, etc.
  • They concluded their presentation by Mario & Dodger each giving a demonstration of their skills.
