Member Spotlight: Our newest member, Rob Radcliff introduced himself to the club. Rob is the Sheriff of Pickaway County, and a life-long resident of Pickaway as well. Rob is/has been involved in Circleville Jaycees (Pres., Regional Director, & JCI Senator), Circleville Youth Soccer (Pres.), & Buckeye State Sheriff (District Director). He also served in the military in Afghanistan. He and his wife, Dodie, are members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Welcome aboard Rob!!

Program: Jim Hooks introduced today's speaker, Brandon Smith, CEO/Producer, Tecumseh. He is also a Rotarian with the Chillicothe Club.


Highlights:

  • Brandon gave some background on “Tecumseh,” the “Haunting on the Mountain,”& the new “Sleepy Hollow” productions.
  • They also have concerts and other events throughout the year, such as a bluegrass concert and a spring performance of “Mamma Mia.”
  • They offer a “package” of fundraising options.
  • “At the end of the day, our mission is to promote the local community’s economy.”
  • He updated us on some of the past & current members of the staff, cast, & the Board.
  • He said that there have actually been only a few actors that have served in the lead role of Tecumseh. Once they receive the role, they stay in for multiple years. He mentioned one gentleman who was in the role for 21 years.
  • “Tecumseh” rated higher than the Columbus Symphony, and received a prestigious grant.
  • They have 7 employees year around; then they ballon in the Spring to about 95 employees.
  • Discussed how they are very aware of the constant battle between ticket prices versus production costs.
  • He pointed out that their “focus is to make their productions a true experience for the audiences & not just an event to attend.”
  • They use volunteers from local non-profits to serve as ushers & ticket takers. In exchange, the company donates $500 at the end of the year to the non-profit organization.
  • Revealed some of the production & performance glitches they have had, such as injuries to the horses & actors.
  • “Tecumseh” owns five horses, and the remainder are hired/loaned for the season.
  • Spoke of how important the Arts are to the community and to children growing up. It provides an outlet and a stability that some people do not have.

  • David Crawford sent a note about how Pres. Ian put together a "very successful" new member orientation last week, that was attended by new memebers as well as some existing members.

Program: Heather Foll introduced today's speaker, David Fausnaugh. David is the Director of the Pickaway County Library, as well as a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club. He is speaking about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) program.

Highlights:

  • Founded by Dolly Parton, due to her personal experience with poverty throughout her childhood.
  • Dolly realized that one of ways to break the cycle of poverty is by learning how to read & write.
  • It is now an international program
  • Recently started in Pickaway County, via the Pickaway County Library.
  • Gives each child in our county one book per month, at no charge, from birth to age of five years old. Each books costs the program about $3 per book.
  • Program works through both County Library & PICCA
  • Our Rotary Club is one of the sponsors. We gave a $1,000 donation this year, and pledged $1,000 next year.
  • Every child can be enrolled at birth, via on-line. County Library or PICCCA can help parents enroll their children.
  • Some of the books even come with an instructional plan to encourage the parent/guardian to interact.
  • Stressed how important pre-literacy skills are to those who are not able to read yet.
