New Member Andy Bull initiated into our club today! Andy is the Pickaway County Health Commissioner. Andy spent three years in South Korea teaching English and looks forward to helping the local community in a different way than his job.

Club Announcements:  

  1. Daryl Wolfe thanked bonus community kitchen volunteers: Rob Radcliff, Daryl Wolfe, David & Marie Crawford, Betsy & Julia Weller, Warren Spangler and Bob McCrady. Under Alice Harker’s direction, we served 151 meals.
  2. Applications for Drexel Poling Service Above Self Award for community members- please see Michele Lanman for application. Due last week of May.
  3. May will be a diaper drive – please bring in child diapers – larger sizes are in more need. Bottoms Up out of Lancaster will be the recipient, they distribute to Pickaway Co.
  4. Board meeting: we will be sponsoring a Cub Scout pack to be the feeder group for our Boy Scout troop

Program:  Jamie Green – Planning NEXT : Future of Agriculture in Pickaway

  • His firm serves communities across the country
  • Unprecedented development on northern part of the county AND significant loss of agriculture across the county
  • Agriculture is a way of life; stewardship of the land; drives the economy (still largest sector of the county and state)
  • Pickaway county will grow by around 18,000 people by 2050, nearly 30%. Approximately 5,732 new households
  • Farmland is selling far above the appraised value
  • Average age of farmers is increasing – our county over 65 years old
  • Environmental conditions are less certain today and in Ohio and much of the Midwest, water use for agriculture is expected to increase significantly
  • County-wide land use study which is going to build on the planning work done; outlines future vision and sets goals; input from the community
  • 500 sq miles of Pickaway County mapped 
  • Future work will be on shaping recommendations to manage growth and encourage prosperity
  • Central Ohio is known in the country as Data Center hub
