Program:   Larry Logan, Furniture Salesman Extraordinaire

  • 3.8 million miles of traveling as a furniture representative for 50 year career
  • He survived on straight commission for his whole career
  • People graduating in interior design are taught “pretty” but not function and construction of furniture
  • NC; PA; NY; MI used to be all furniture craftsmen locations. 1970’s manufacturing went to China for cheap labor and quality went downhill
  • Vietnamese are best craftsmen of furniture today – French taught them
  • Prior to COVID – container of furniture (10,000 pieces of knocked down)- $3,000 to come from Vietnam to California. During COVID – 10 times more $30,000
  • Check drawers – how are the drawers connected – dove tail or staples? Walk away from the staples unless you want to keep repairing
  • Any upholstered furniture – springdown, not just foam so when you stand up, it bounces back. Always ask what is underneath the fabric – you want wood frame
  • Performance fabric is the key to lasting a lot of years
  • Leather – bonded leather which are pieces heated and glued together; painted leather covers up inexpensive leather; inside/outside leather which is leather on inside and vinyl on outside; you want the cow hide if you want the piece to last for years
