Program: Ashville’s own James Barr and Bob Hines talking about Snake Den Mounds

  • 2006/2007 archeologist  knocked on James’ door with his magnetometer and wanted to explore some of the land
  • Elevation is 1,100 feet and is the highest location in Pickaway Co
  • Pickaway County ranks 3rd in the number of Moundbuilder earthworks in Ohio
  • The Snake Den Complex is only known large earthworks complex remaining in Pickaway Co
  • Why the name “Snake Den”? – Since horsepower was so important in 1800’s and horses are afraid of snakes, early settlers built a fence around the stone the snakes used as a den over the winter and tried to kill them as they emerged. Of course they could not kill them all.
  • National newspapers in 1897 reported on discoveries at Snake Den including silver nuggets and moundbuilders bones
  • The Snake Den Silver Nuggets were displayed at world fairs
  • Items were lost for more than a century until 2006
  • As the magnetometer data was reviewed – it is now considered a sacred complex
  • 1950 – gas line was added to the property, so anything underneath that line cannot be identified
  • Barr Family worked with Appalachia Ohio Alliance and was presented the 2020 Ohio’s State Historic Preservation Award
  • Experts from around the country and the world comes to the Barr’s to donate their time to further explore the site
  • Chinese contingent has come to see how the site is being preserved
  • 2017 – publication for elementary  students – Bob created an educational comic book
  • Snake Den does have email list for membership and volunteer opportunities – visit www.snake-den-mounds.com
  • PCCF helped with funding so Snake Den presentations have display cases now with items found on the grounds
  • Area schools are encouraged for field trips – digs are usually happening on the grounds by university groups
  • The Snake Den Mounds Complex linear pits date back to 900 BCE
  • More than one culture has been proven to have used the site
