New Member: Katie Randolph was welcomed into membership today! She is an account mgr for Green Legacy Greenhouse in Orient. Katie is an outdoor enthusiast and was sponsored by Stacy Young.

Announcements

  • Becky Hammond from Sunrise Rotary and PICCA asked for help cleaning up the river bank near Rts. 22/23. Time slots are available May 4, 5, 6th from 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm. If you can help, contact Wes Ebenhack at [email protected]. Boots/gloves/trash grabbers are recommended. Trash bags/dumpsters will be provided.
  • Gary thanked Daryl, Bob McCrady, David & Marie, Warren, John Ellis & Angela for help at the Food Kitchen. We expected 80 and served closer to 100 meals.
  • Charlie Hedges presented Paul Harris +2 award to Dave Webb
  • Paula Routt – Circleville Food Pantry interim director Bradley P. joined us to accept the over 1800 women’s products collected. The food pantry is open 5 days a week. Women’s products are the most requested items. We were awarded 3rd place out of 59 clubs!
  • Rob Radcliff – May 8th, Extra Soup Kitchen. Help is always welcome.
  • Rob also announced Program Chairs need information turned in by May 18th
  • Dan Fouts – Mayor’s Breakfast on May 11th, 7:30am at the Fairgrounds, is honoring our own Rotarian, Tim Colburn. Please sign up by May 5th.
  • Connie Chamberlain – Thank you to the scholarship committee. In June we will be introduced to our 4 winners.
  • Tony Chamberlain – June 16th is our golf tournament. Need teams, volunteers and donations.

Scholarship Drawing: Gary Dean was the winner of $35. The jackpot is $1,236 and it continues!

Program: Kevin T. Donahue – Abe Lincoln

  • 158th years ago Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – April 14, 1865 (Good Friday)
  • The Arch Street Theatre was where John Wilkes Booth practiced his acting. Drew Barrymore is related to the owners of The Arch Street Theatre owners.
  • Booth tried three times to kidnap Lincoln (in early 1865)
  • Lincoln never liked security to be around him
  • “Our American Cousin” was the British comedy the Lincoln’s were watching at Ford’s Theatre
  • Deringer Pistol was used, it is now housed at Ford’s Theatre. 41 caliber bullet was used. To avoid copyright violations, Derringer pistols now have an extra “R”
  • One women and 9 men were conspirators to kill many government officials. Booth assigned himself Lincoln.
  • All conspirators were tried by a military tribunal. It went on for 7 weeks and had over 360 witnesses.
  • Lincoln’s body (with his young son Willie) took a 13 day route back to Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois. The whole Lincoln family is buried there except son, Robert who is buried at Arlington.
