  • District Conference update on 4-Way Speech Contest – Julia Weller from Logan Elm was the applicant sponsored by our club and placed third in the district contest. She will join us in June so we can be impressed.

Program: Melanoma Awareness Month presented by Kara Valentine Davis, BSN, RN

  • Kara is an Oncology Patient Navigator at OhioHealth Berger
  • Kara is a 2007 graduate of CHS and went to Ohio State for her RN degree. After years at Ohio State and The James, she joined Berger
  • This Saturday, 9am-noon at CHS will be OhioHealth Berger skin checks for the community
  • OhioHealth CancerCall: 614-566-4321 if you were just diagnosed and need someone to talk with about options or connections
  • Over 1,000 people are diagnosed every day with skin cancer
  • 80% of skin cancers are Basal or Squamous cell cancer
  • Face, head, neck, ears are most common places
  • Risk factors: light skinned, red or blond hair
  • Prevention – look for changes to moles, every 2 hours apply SPF 30, wear hat, sunglasses, avoid tanning beds and get regular skin check ups
  • Radiation exposure changes DNA and can increase your risk for skin cancer
  • Melanoma – deadliest form of skin cancer and is most curable when detected and treated early.
  • Examine body front and back in the mirror, with arms raised, look on back of upper arms and palms, backs of legs and feet, spaces between toes and soles, back of neck and scalp with hand mirror
  • SPF 30 sunscreen and don’t forget your lips and tops of your ears
  • Kids burn more easily. Babies younger than 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight.
  • UV rays are around all the time, no matter what the season.
  • Skin Cancer can be hereditary. Talk to your children and grandchildren.
  • Breast and Colon are two of the most common diagnosed cancers. Age 45 is the new colonoscopy age. Please schedule your appointments, it can save your life.
  • If normal habits change, it’s your bodies way of telling you something’s up.
