Scholarship Drawing:  Ty Ankrom was the winner of $28 which was donated to the women’s products campaign! The jackpot is $733 and it will continue to grow!

 Program:  Logan Hittle, Director of NIL for Ohio State

  • Zanesville native who went from janitor of Woody Hayes facility to walk on for the football team, to graduate and now Director in the Athletics department!
  • July 1, 2021 first time ever student-athletes could receive monetary benefits
  • Ohio State NIL Athletics department developed under Gene Smith’s leadership. Gene is a frequent advisor to other schools about the topic.
  • State Law allows universities to restrict certain categories (alcohol, gambling, tobacco, etc.)
  • Student-athletes must disclose arrangements prior to activity
  • Allows student-athletes to hire marketing representation
  • NIL activities cannot take place during official team activities
  • NCAA provides updates to all the guidelines frequently and state laws also apply
  • NIL is opportunity for student-athletes to understand how to run a business
  • OSU provides education on tax implications, contract education, etc.
  • NIL staff partners with Moritz College of Law to provide legal advice on contracts to student-athletes since the NIL department is prohibited from doing so
  • Ohio State has 1,100 athletes

  • Parade of Homes used to be the signature event BIA sponsored (number of builders who can afford the land in order to build the developments is non-existent)
  • 62 of 88 counties in Ohio lost population
  • 89 people a day are projected to move here (Central Ohio)
  • 1 job added to 1 home built consistent for last 20 years – not anymore
  • $285,000 avg. home price in Pickaway county with only 59% of the population able to afford a home
  • Currently at 1.5 months supply of inventory – should be about 3 months
  • 1/5 of acre or less is 70% of homes being built outside Ohio. Our homes are $35,000 higher than Indianapolis because of the lot size here in Ohio
  • Starter homes are not available because builders cannot build something economically low enough for someone can buy it. Starter “homes” are apartments or townhomes.
  • Ohio is an outlier for zoning is done by townships, cities, etc. Challenging to builders.
  • Ohio has 600 school districts and the differences within the cost structures impact home prices
  • Water, sewer, electric are big obstacles for development
  • Residential construction –
    • 2.9 jobs & $130k in tax revenue per single family home
    • When we build homes, we are putting people to work

  • Becky Hammond from Sunrise Rotary and PICCA asked for help cleaning up the river bank near Rts. 22/23. Time slots are available May 4, 5, 6th from 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm. If you can help, contact Wes Ebenhack at webenhack@live.com. Boots/gloves/trash grabbers are recommended. Trash bags/dumpsters will be provided.
  • Gary thanked Daryl, Bob McCrady, David & Marie, Warren, John Ellis & Angela for help at the Food Kitchen. We expected 80 and served closer to 100 meals.
  • Charlie Hedges presented Paul Harris +2 award to Dave Webb
  • Paula Routt – Circleville Food Pantry interim director Bradley P. joined us to accept the over 1800 women’s products collected. The food pantry is open 5 days a week. Women’s products are the most requested items. We were awarded 3rd place out of 59 clubs!
  • Rob Radcliff – May 8th, Extra Soup Kitchen. Help is always welcome.
  • Rob also announced Program Chairs need information turned in by May 18th
  • Dan Fouts – Mayor’s Breakfast on May 11th, 7:30am at the Fairgrounds, is honoring our own Rotarian, Tim Colburn. Please sign up by May 5th.

  • 158th years ago Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – April 14, 1865 (Good Friday)
  • The Arch Street Theatre was where John Wilkes Booth practiced his acting. Drew Barrymore is related to the owners of The Arch Street Theatre owners.
  • Booth tried three times to kidnap Lincoln (in early 1865)
  • Lincoln never liked security to be around him
  • “Our American Cousin” was the British comedy the Lincoln’s were watching at Ford’s Theatre
  • Deringer Pistol was used, it is now housed at Ford’s Theatre. 41 caliber bullet was used. To avoid copyright violations, Derringer pistols now have an extra “R”
  • One women and 9 men were conspirators to kill many government officials. Booth assigned himself Lincoln.
  • All conspirators were tried by a military tribunal. It went on for 7 weeks and had over 360 witnesses.
  • Lincoln’s body (with his young son Willie) took a 13 day route back to Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois. The whole Lincoln family is buried there except son, Robert who is buried at Arlington.

Board meeting snap-shot

  • Welcomed Patty Rothe and Connie Chamberlain. Both are new directors beginning their two-year terms on July 1
  • District conference on April 28-29. A few members are attending.
  • Heidi, Ellery and Drexel to review the inventory of bank accounts, CDs, etc. and formulate a master list of accounts
  • Warren discussed personal and club goals for his presidential year
  • New member induction is pending for two candidates
  • 18 new members inducted in the past 10 months. All are becoming active
  • Service Above Self committee has three candidates. Discussion as to awarding one or more awards. Board prefers to stay with one awardee for 2023. Board may opt to award a “Rotarian of the Year” in the future
  • Collection of womens products update, Noon Rotary collected the third highest total in the District. Paula Routt, a new member, chaired the drive.
  • Connie is chairing the scholarship committee and said it received a large number of entries and will be interviewing six candidates next week. Five will be selected to receive $2,000 scholarships
  • Board approved $1,000 donation to Dolly Parton Library and $1,000 to Miryante Community Center in Uganda. Both donations will be submitted to the District matching grant program
  • Euchre Tournament is June 1. (Another project being led by a few of our newest members.) Proceeds will support the scholarship fund.
  • Golf tournament is June 16. Proceeds support the scholarship fund
  • Patty updated board on ongoing discussions about the return of Interact Club to Circleville High School. The dilemma at this time is that an additional service club may not attract many members. Discussions with school officials will continue.

  • Tar Hallow has NO cell reception. That is a life skill some of her 4-H students learn every year. Technology “just stopped”.

Program: Jan Shannon – Miryante Community Centre, Uganda

  • 2009 the Miryante Orphanage was founded by Laura Corcoran from Chillicothe (sister of Marie Corcoran Wilbanks from Circleville Sunrise)
  • Over 100 foster care children currently
  • 48% of Ugandan’s are age 15 and less
  • Circleville Sunrise partners with Mubende Metro Rotary Club-District 9213, Circleville Rotary, Chillicothe First Capital club, Zanesville Rotary Clubs, Root Cause Uganda and Shark Tank winner of $5,000 from our District 6690
  • Multiple Rotary Area’s of Focus – economic development, child health, disease prevention and treatment
  • With the first district grant and contributions from both Circleville Rotary clubs 2 years ago, a pit latrine was constructed
  • Last year’s project was a fence for safety and a playground
  • Now starting to build a community center
  • Since January 13th – bulldozer’s starting to build access road to the facility
  • Feb. 7th, leveling ground and bricks were hand delivered and hand unloaded. Footer is going up now after being hand dug. One cement factory in Mubende and it was off line, so there was a delay
  • Shark tank and donations collected totaled $20,500 for outside of building and half of the inside
  • Need another $19,500 for inside work.
  • What’s next? – Currently trying to raise funds – latest $500 came in from New Zealand. Using contacts from around the world.
  • What’s next? – Solar Panels and a water tank – Circleville Sunrise is applying for another district grant. ($5,000 project)
  • Many individual opportunities for sponsorships of children – $50 per month provides all the school supplies, uniforms, food and care that a child needs in Uganda. (miryanteorphanage.org)
  • There are some Rotary Clubs that sponsor a child
  • Animal purchase fund – so when children graduate, they receive an animal (a sign of prosperity)
  • If you are interested in traveling to Uganda, please reach out to Jan Shannon or Marie Wilbanks from Circleville Sunrise – there are two visits being planned

Friday afternoon is at Columbus State from noon-4 with focus on club activity for next fiscal year. Friday night is a reception on top of Veteran’s Memorial and Saturday will be back at Vet’s for the whole day. See Marie if you have problems registering.   • Club 125 push – it is an annual giving campaign for our District. Our website, circlevillerotary.org has a link or deliver a check to Drexel.

  • Charlie Hedges reported Foundation giving for the end of third quarter – 53 current members are Paul Harris Fellows. $384,212 is our clubs all time giving to the foundation. This year $6,000 was foundation goal, currently at $9,540!! Add Polio Plus $2,240 and we have donated $11,980!!!
