In Memory:  We remember the life of Earl Palm today. Earl was a member of our club for 66 years and passed away May 28, 2024. He served as president in 1974-75 and sponsored many members.  His wise counsel will be missed.

  • 2026 is on it’s way – planning time is now
  • Cleaning head stones of patriots is a task which might be a project for our club – through SAR/DAR

  • $233,908 delinquent fines
  • 21 number employees
  • $150000 grant received from state for programs
  • 3.7 million people in the US on probation
  • Recovery court started in 2022. Treatment team works with weekly to review cases so people in program have accountability and swift consequences. 14-18 months long and voluntary. Currently 7 members.
  • First graduate of program is employed, married and baby on the way and he understands the program turned him around
  • Also creating alumni board so those that have gone through it can help shape the future of the program

Historical Moment:

  • In appreciation of Drexel Poling’s 45 year tenure as Circleville Rotary secretary and with the suggestion of Past District Governor Bill Stout, the board has approved the renaming of the annual Service Above Self Non-Rotarian Award. From today forward it will be known as the Drexel Poling Service Above Self Award. Drexel has served presidents going back to Howard Stevenson in 1979.  His service to the community goes further than Mr. Pumpkin Show announcer (50 years). He and his wife, Sheila, established the Wright-Poling dog shelter, he has served on boards of the United Way, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Circleville Band Boosters Scholarship Trust. Their insurance company, Hummel & Plum is a benefactor for many local causes. A grateful club honors his service to us all. Sit back and enjoy the meetings Drexel!

  • There are outreach programs from Wyngate – if you know someone who could use a meal and a friend still living in their home let Megan know – a meal can be delivered
  • Volunteers are welcome who can come on a regular basis
  • Community drive-thru’s monthly
  • $2,500-$3,500 for independent living with utilities, food, apartment cleaning – do have waiting list
  • $5,000-$8,000 for assisted living depending on level of care

  • Restitution claims, answer questions, etc. trying to get people through the court system
  • Federal cases, municipal, juvenile are handled
  • New victim rights form follows the person who committed the crime,  by law, any changes to the criminal will trigger notification to their victim – paroled, moved, died, etc.
  • Victims office is funded through Attorney General and County Commissioners

  • This off season has been as eventful as season
  • Two offensive coordinators hired; two new position coaches; brought in Alabama transfers
  • Just finished scrimmage which was broadcast
  • Quarterback competition between 5 guys
  • Older/experienced roster
  • First year of 18 schools in the Big Ten
  • Expanded playoffs – could play 16/17 games in the season
  • Fatal loss will not happen to change your fate and make it to play into January
  • How you manage your health and roster will be important starting this year
  • Rivalry with Michigan will change this year because they could play back to back weeks if they are both on top
  • Transfer portal is open for next two weeks. You can transfer as many times as you want
  • Chip Kelly moved from UCLA to be an assistant at OSU so he could be with the athletes instead of the administrative duties of a head coach
  • NIL – OSU has a lot of returning Juniors who will be Seniors. Higher percentage of students returning knowing their NIL dollars can be used as they continue to develop and maybe go higher in the NFL draft by waiting for a year.

  • Zanesville native who went from janitor of Woody Hayes facility to walk on for the football team, to graduate and now Director in the Athletics department!
  • July 1, 2021 first time ever student-athletes could receive monetary benefits
  • Ohio State NIL Athletics department developed under Gene Smith’s leadership. Gene is a frequent advisor to other schools about the topic.
  • State Law allows universities to restrict certain categories (alcohol, gambling, tobacco, etc.)
  • Student-athletes must disclose arrangements prior to activity
  • Allows student-athletes to hire marketing representation
  • NIL activities cannot take place during official team activities
  • NCAA provides updates to all the guidelines frequently and state laws also apply
  • NIL is opportunity for student-athletes to understand how to run a business
  • OSU provides education on tax implications, contract education, etc.
  • NIL staff partners with Moritz College of Law to provide legal advice on contracts to student-athletes since the NIL department is prohibited from doing so
  • Ohio State has 1,100 athletes

  • Parade of Homes used to be the signature event BIA sponsored (number of builders who can afford the land in order to build the developments is non-existent)
  • 62 of 88 counties in Ohio lost population
  • 89 people a day are projected to move here (Central Ohio)
  • 1 job added to 1 home built consistent for last 20 years – not anymore
  • $285,000 avg. home price in Pickaway county with only 59% of the population able to afford a home
  • Currently at 1.5 months supply of inventory – should be about 3 months
  • 1/5 of acre or less is 70% of homes being built outside Ohio. Our homes are $35,000 higher than Indianapolis because of the lot size here in Ohio
  • Starter homes are not available because builders cannot build something economically low enough for someone can buy it. Starter “homes” are apartments or townhomes.
  • Ohio is an outlier for zoning is done by townships, cities, etc. Challenging to builders.
  • Ohio has 600 school districts and the differences within the cost structures impact home prices
  • Water, sewer, electric are big obstacles for development
  • Residential construction –
    • 2.9 jobs & $130k in tax revenue per single family home
    • When we build homes, we are putting people to work

  • 4-way speech contest – Thank you from Tony Robinson to Warren, Bob Foster, Ellery Elick, Gary Montgomery, Tom Duvall, Bob Sneed. Great event – 11 students competed and 2 are being sent to the District competition at Deer Creek, April 19th. Our club’s winner is Crystal Candlish, Sunrise’s winner is Julia Weller.
  • Women’s Products March Madness collection with the winner being announced at the District Conference! Paula and Michelle will shop for you. 2,100 items to date, which surpasses our third place win last year – but Paula is shooting for 3,000 products! She wants Warren to pick-up the trophy at District Conference!
  • Fill out next year’s service forms for President-Elect, Heidi White

SAA:  P3 is donating to our SAA fund so speakers for the month will have more than the usual 20 minutes

  • MORPC serves a 15 county region – including Pickaway
  • 87 member communities and organizations
  • 100+ board members
  • MORPC’s focus is on mobility, sustainability and local government in Central Ohio
  • Central Ohio is growing – planning has been going on for the growth
  • Another 700,000 people expected by 2050
  • Pickaway county – 20,000 more people expected by 2050
  • Pickaway is within a 60 miles radius between the Intel development to the north and the Honda expansion to the west
  • Housing production remains lower than Central Ohio peer markets
  • Columbus is largest community east of the Mississippi without access to mass transit – we travel to Cincinnati to pick up Amtrak. Talks are happening to connect with Cincinnati and Cleveland and Pittsburg and Fort Wayne
  • Working on new trails for hiking and biking
