  • Ohio Buckeye Power provides generation resources and transmission coordination to Ohio’s 24 Electric co-ops
  • 90% of our energy comes from fossil fuel generation
  • Cost of transmission up 230% since 2018 and over 400% since 2011. Capital investments at the plants because of changing regulations
  • Federal level: EPA regulations issued in May 2024:
    • Required 90% carbon capture and storage by 2032 or retirement for existing coal and natural gas plants
    • Legal challenge to US Supreme Court (unproven technology, too costly, unreasonable timelines)
  • Demand for power is projected to increase far beyond current supply
    • Electrification of cars, trucks, heating
    • Ohio load could double by 2030 just by adding data centers
    • Federal Energy Regulatory commission upped its 5 year load growth forecast from 2.6% to 4.7%

Our condolences to the family of Dannie Fouts. Dannie died on our meeting day last week – Nov. 14, 2024. He was a past president (1995-96), held multiple Paul Harris Fellow awards, was a member of the Paul Harris Society, and our club’s charitable activities committee chairman for years. His life was devoted to serving others.

New Member induction: Ty Ankrom introduced Larry Logan. Larry was a member of our club back in the ‘80’s! Larry is recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star as team leader for 5th Special Forces in Cambodia. Taught at West Point and has been in the furniture business for 50 years with over $125 million in sales. Currently Chairmen of Friends of Ted Lewis Park. Welcome back Larry!

Program: Judge Elisa Peters & Renee Rittenhouse – Recovering from addiction

  • Judge Peters took bench Jan. 2020, just in time of COVID. Met with probation department and local parties for a specialized docket.
  • Compiled treatment providers, probation officers and judge who the accused met with before jailed so they know options.
  • Recovery Court program started in 2021. Four phases participants go through. Voluntary program. Meeting with judge and probation officers every week along with counselors multiple times in phase 1. Program lasts 13 months.  Since inception – 3 graduating classes with 9 participants so far.
  • Program funded through grants
  • Judge Harsha and Kneece both have recovery courts as well
  • Renee shared her story. We did not leave the room untouched and the standing ovation was full of support for her journey.

Our condolences to the family of Bill Richards. Bill joined Circleville Rotary in 1966 and was a member till his death, Nov. 12, 2024. His friend Bill Stout sponsored him. The Richards farm was the site of yearly club and exchange student picnics. Bill was a world leader in farming practices and we join his family in mourning his loss.

  • Sock-tober! Was a club record! 2,886 pairs was enough to win the District contest. Donations were dropped off at the Corner Closet and the Amvets Auxiliary.

  • First trip in 2022 – 8 months after start of war. Wanted to go as a photojournalist. 
  • His initial thought would be to meet Rotarians who could help with logistics (Ed is ex-Army)
  • Stroke of luck was Rotarians coming out of Ukraine into Poland where Ed was – took Ed into Ukraine
  • He was able to meet Rotarians who took him all around Ukraine – meeting him at train stations after dark
  • Rotarians collect goods from all over the world and distribute
  • Hard to harvest crops in Ukraine because you don’t know where the mine’s have been dropped. There is a group out of England who are working at unmanning the mine’s

  • Sock-tober! Was a club record! 2,886!!! Sock-broker Daryl helped with shopping and Atomic Credit Union also collected socks. Creative Chaos donated over 1,700 pairs. Donations will be split between the Corner Closet and the VFW Auxiliary.
  • 2023-24 District Award Ceremony last weekend had Circleville Rotary come away with an award for Polio Plus giving. We were one of 28 clubs recognized for giving over $1500. 
  • The other prestigious award was the District Champion Citation. Only 5 of the 58 district clubs received recognition for 1. Participation at every district event 2. Increase in foundation giving from the prior year 3. Reaching 4 of the 7 district initiatives. Congratulations to IPP Warren Spangler and Foundation Chair Jayme Fountain and all members.

  • Provide accessible fully attended mobile restroom facility that is clean and comfortable for individuals and their caregivers
  • Pickaway County Board of DD paid for Momentum Refresh to come to Pumpkin Show and other county events
  • This allows people who have never been able to attend festivals an opportunity to enjoy knowing their needs can be met
  • One in 7 people in the US have a disability that impacts their mobility 
  • All the trucks are staffed and cleaned after each guest
  • Momentum Refresh is first of its kind in the US for restroom equity at public venues
  • Momentum goes above ADA requirements; wider stalls, hoists, adult changing table, adjustable sink
  • 315 guests in 2024 – looking forward to next year
  • Currently 7 units nationwide

Program:  Mark Maier – Pet Taxidermy

  • About 10 years ago Mark decided to go away from wildlife to pets
  • Taxidermy means “removing skin”
  • Mark started in 1975 by reading books since there were no schools for training
  • Has been doing taxidermy part or full time since 1975
  • He has a whole family business with wife and children involved with a total of 8 employees
  • 475 dogs/cats/birds/reptiles were done 2 years ago
  • His location is next to Interstate Battery on Rt.23
  • All over North America send pets to Mark
  • Around 250 people a year would like their pet’s heart preserved
  • People love their animals and want to keep them close, they will pay for taxidermy which can be in the thousands of dollars
  • They provide a life-time guarantee on their work

  • Congrats to Dr. Liggett for winning the big pumpkin award again!!
  • Pumpkin Show Booth – challenges before the show but with the wonderful weather (after preview night) the following things happened:
    • We knew we would run out of pies so we stopped selling whole pies in order to maximize profit
    • We knew Friday we would not have enough ice cream for Saturday, so Velvet brought us everything they had (10 tubs at 4:10am). The Pumpkin Ice Cream in the tubs we use is only sold to us. 
    • Saturday: 4:30pm out of ice cream and 6:30pm out of pies
    • $11,643 profit for this year!!
    • We thank Tom Duvall who worked 8 shifts even with his painful back
    • 40 members did not work the booth, so we’ll encourage more participation next year – this is the biggest fundraiser of the year
  • Trick-or-Treat Tuesday, Oct. 25th; 5-6pm in front of Micro Systems
  • Sock-tober! Everything ends next Thursday, the 31st. Please see Angie at the front desk.

  • Harvest Christian Welcome Tent new this year SE Corner of N. Pickaway and East Watt St – area to just relax, religious services, baby changing area, kids activities, music
  • Eyes of Freedom, coming in on Monday with escort
  • Ohio University Marching 110 on Thursday night for parade – no concert
  • Movie crew “The Pumpkin Lady” – Mosquito Films out of Marion will be filming during The Show. Media committee will be escorting them.
  • Germany film crew will also be at the Pumpkin Show filming – Spengler TV is doing a documentary of Americans pre-election. Camera’s and film crew will also be escorted with media committee.
  • Economic impact study has been commissioned from OU. Pumpkin Show is 117 years old, we want to understand the impact The Show has. Impact to Circleville along with surrounding area. Study should be completed in February and will be distributed
  • Safety is always in the forefront of every decision and changes are coming this year
