  • District Awards for last Rotary Year (2022-2023) were presented last weekend and our club came away with three:
    • Second place in the district for number of Rotarians (17) sponsoring new members

  • Sock-tober District competition has netted 1.202 pairs of socks.  (Last years total was 770.) Betty Wolford, Corner Closet accepted the socks. We thank Angela Beavers and her customers for contributing 402 pairs; Matt Hafey and Janet Spangler who dropped off a box each of socks. 
  • Corner Closet – any baby to children’s size clothes donations would be very helpful
  • Donation was made of $250 for Luena Foundation. Greg Lam indicates it will help build a medical center and bio toilets in Western Uganda
  • Jingle Bell Tea – Dec. 10th. Call historical society for reservations 
  • Wreaths Across America – “Camp Charlotte SAR” for checks – $17 per wreath. See Gary, Tony or Rob.
  • Gary Montgomery – Tire tread depth. More than 2/32nd’s tire tread depth. Top of Lincoln’s head of penny.

 Program:  Don McIlroy introduced the Chiefs in Circleville Police/Fire

  • Chief Baer reports:
    • Accidents are down within the city from 185 all year to YTD=100
    • There are 200 fewer citations this year
    • 5,000 more calls for service this year (majority are not emergent, just informational)
    • Work together with fire department more and training with many other offices
    • More virtual crimes and child sex crimes are up with search warrants for computer searches
  • Chief Thompson
    • Started in 2019 – should have had 15 full time firefighters
    • Please vote for levy on Tuesday
    • Was able to get to 18 full time firefighters
    • Added 6 more fully funded by federal government grant for three years
    • 24 full time firefighters/EMT’s currently 
    • Now doing in house CPR training
    • Looking for all grants and funds available
    • 3,813 emergency calls – 85% medical, rest is fire
    • Current ladder truck is from 1997, one is being built and funded by a grant
    • Ambulance services – MedCare will not do call for nursing home transport to hospital only return to nursing home from hospital. Therefore, nursing homes call EMT’s for transport
    • Cardiac/stroke/unresponsive- ambulance and fire truck to help with manpower if needed
  • Any thoughts about city roundabouts? Walnut Creek and N. Court St potential
  • Coughlin Auto working on the land across from Sheetz in order to put it up for sale

  • Big Wheel Race wrap-up with Jim Hooks: 69 kids signed up and we had over 55 ride. A lot of media coverage and a big article in the paper. Thank you to all the volunteers!
  • Pumpkin Show Booth wrap-up with Daryl Wolfe. We have cleared a record amount thanks to all your hard work. $11,150.
    • How many pieces of pumpkin pie did we sell? 2,432
    • How many gallons of ice cream did we sell? 177 gallons
    • How many 2-liter root beers – 108
    • # of credit card transactions during the week – 531 ($3,600+)

  • Disaster Aid USA Trailer: Warren and Marie rode in Friday night parade with Dave Roasa, Grove City Rotary and the Zone lead for Disaster Aid USA. Also in town was Bruce Schultes from Cross Timbers Rotary in Texas, District 5790. The trailer is outfitted with over $12,000 in equipment.  Our club is listed with 13 others who contributed $500 or more. Home Depot provided a $4,300 grant for products to fill the trailer.

 Program:  Gerhard Maroscher – “An American Story”

  • Born in Romania during WWII. Family lived there for 800 years.
  • Dad was a teacher and mom was a homemaker
  • Romania became Hungary in 1940
  • Beginning 1944, the war came to home while dad was fighting
  • Left on last Red Cross train to go to Vienna which took 3 weeks
  • Made it to refugee camp in Austria – sickness overtook them
  • Mother negotiated with the Nazi camp director for women to be able to cook for their children. She lived to tell Gerhard his story
  • Dad was a POW
  • 1946 reunited with all family
  • Sponsored by Christ Lutheran Church in Bexley, made it to the USA
  • Gerhard visits local schools and any organization which asks – truth from someone who lived it

 Program:  Yolanda Johnson – Marching Band Director of the Ohio State School for the Blind 

  • Band was started in 2005
  • Students are a mix of visual impaired students. Some completely blind and some in just one eye. 
  • There is also a pep band for those musicians who might not be able to march
  • Being a music teacher takes preparation and creating materials because it is not readily available 
  • “Prepare, Adapt and Overcome” is band motto
  • All the band kids are athletes as well, swimming, track and field, so practice cannot overlap sports
  • Music code by Louis Braille, who was also a musician
  • Students come from all over Ohio
  • Adult volunteers are needed for only about 1/2 students in the marching band. Others can see enough to follow the cues on either side of them
  • Looking for more volunteers!
  • K-12, 100 students in band
  • Funding is donation based and Lions club donations along with fundraising events
  • Ms. Johnson’s personal goal is to get the band on an international trip
  • Percussion section is all high school students – middle school is not interested. Also need students playing flute and saxophone
  • How do you direct? When in a classroom, I can ask how many can see me. While marching, students have to rely on their listening skills and need to practice changes of tempo based on the music 
  • MaKenzie Love and others visit the school in summer to further their education on skills learning which might not be taught in the district schools
  • Ms. Johnson indicates the school in known internationally and receives calls from Canadian and Japanese schools looking for advice on music education and activities for their own students

  • Donation Events – 12 local. Boogie on the Blacktop at the Eagles; Tiger Day – every fall sports team challenge – 1,000 individual items collected; Take back the strip cruisers – 1 event. $1,400 and items; Walmart did donation event; 4H students collected and then delivered to the cupboards

  • Apothecary is a drop off location – Ken visits once a month for pick-up
  • Sutherland donated all items to build the cupboards; Circleville High School shop class built them
  • Dog food and cat food rebagged and distributed to the closets

  • Naloxone.Ohio.gov – website where you can order naloxone for you, someone you know or your organization to hand out. It will be mailed to you, not tracking who is ordering.  Kits cannot be resold, but given away.
  • OH Against OD; Beat the Stigma – ad campaigns
  • Counterfeit Pill Campaign – campaign about only taking pills from healthcare professionals
  • Recovery Within Reach (toolkit put out through commerce department)  – resources for financial advisors so people who think they have to pull all their IRA money out to help a family member can look for other options. How to talk about addiction resources, treatment finder, online training opportunities.
  • Workforce Development: recovery friendly employer training modules
    • Partnership between RecoveryOhio and Ohio Job & Family Services, Office of Workforce Transformation and Ohio Chamber
    • 8 video modules ranging from 10-30 minutes
  • EnCompass Training: teaches the science of addiction and equips participants with knowledge and tools to address substance use disorders. Carol trained 2500 people in Ohio over 2 years. Now equipping each county with their own trainer
  • Emergency Comprehensive Care – when someone presents at an ED with opioid abuse, treatment begins immediately and hand off to treatment facility
    • 2022, six funded health systems developed sustainable policies in 31 emergency departments. Over 16,000 patients have been transitioned to care
