  • Paula Routt introduced “March Madness for Women” the state-wide service project and contest collecting toiletry items for women. We will be collecting deodorant, shampoo, soap, wipes, tampons, sanitary pads, incontinence products through the month of March. Monetary donations can be given to Paula/Angie/Marie and they will shop for you.

Program: Ana Dutra – Brazil Rotary Student Exchange

  • “One of my biggest dreams was to be part of an exchange program and my family has been so supportive”
  • Ana’s mother is a Rotarian in Brazil and Ana is involved in Interact and plans to be in Rotaract in college
  • 18 exchange students from Brazil are in 6 different countries currently
  • Brazil is the biggest country in South America with 27 states
  • Soccer is the most famous sport in Brazil
  • Economy in Brazil is agricultural along with steel and metal industries
  • Sao Paulo has 12.4 million residents
  • Rio: 6.78 million residents. Used to be coffee producers, but warmer now and that is not good for coffee beans
  • Tourism is large and getting bigger
  • Catholic Religion is the religion of the country
  • Carnival is the main festivity in Brazil “The Greatest Show on Earth”. Jennifer Jones was in Brazil for Carnival. Starts 44 days prior to Easter.
  • Only country to have 5 World Cup titles
  • Two of the service projects for her Interact club – 1. teaching people how to sew. Made masks for pandemic 2. Collect soda pull tabs and plastic bottles to turn in for wheelchairs donated to a local hospital
  • Brazil has mandatory English classes in school
  • Ana plans on journalism as a career and will go to OU for a campus visit in hopes of studying in the USA

New member board approved: Tom Duvall has been approved by the executive board for membership. He is a retired product manager and currently serves on Circleville City Council. Tom is sponsored by Gary Dean.

Rural Urban Day: We had approximately 90 people in attendance, one of the largest crowds in the past several years. Rotary showed its appreciation to the agricultural community who keeps us food secure and provides stewardship of the land. We thank the Presbyterian Church congregational care team for our wonderful meal and table decorations.

New Member Day!!! We inducted three new Rotarians today – Dave Horning (Bob Sneed sponsor), Makiah Maxson Seifert (Carly Neff sponsor), Paula Routt (Drexel Poling sponsor).

Board meeting highlights

  • Discussed annual increase in per-member charges to our club by Rotary International and District. Fees will be increasing over the next few years, $160 for 2023-24. Current exec. board strategy is to offset additional fees with broader effort to recruit new members.
  • Heidi reported the scholarship committee (chaired by Connie Chamberlain) is getting applications mailed out.
  • Board voted to request applications from members for a “Service Above Self” award to honor a non-Rotarian who has made a positive and enduring change in the lives of others. Last award was presented in 2017 to Mollie Hedges.
  • District meeting is in Columbus April 28-29. All Rotarians are encouraged to attend.
  • Warren is attending All-Ohio president-elect meeting March 10-11
  • Ian Webb is holding an orientation session for a few new members as we rework the orientation process to make it more effective and timely.
  • Applications for several proposed members pending
  • Ellery reported attendance at March 2 Rural/Urban Day will be similar to past years. More than 50 guests expected.
  • Tony Robinson is chairing 4-Way Speech Contest. Entries are filtering in.
  • Ellery asked for a motion to move any existing accounts at U.S. Bank to other local institutions for more flexibility if/when treasurers change. All members approved.
  • Board discussed the current vacancy on the executive board due to Ellery leaving his director position on the board to assume the treasurer position. With only four months remaining in the current Rotary year, the board decided to take no action on appointing a replacement. A full board will be in place on July 1.

  • The troop will still have weekly meetings at Community UMC
  • Scout Master for Troop 52 is Rob Fanska. He is a Logan Elm grad and achieved his Eagle Scout from Troop 52 with Joe McNemar as his Scout Master.
  • 9 youth and 7 adult volunteers currently. Would like to expand and find youth talking to their friends is the best recruiting tool.
  • Each scout troop leader is elected for 6 months and the adults are there for guidance. The troop leader will gain experience in planning events, communication, running a successful meeting, etc.
  • Upcoming events the troop plans; tour of Monmouth Cave in KY; Newark summer camp; Float trip; Backpacking in Zaleski State Forest in the fall
  • The troop is interested in learning more about Rotary and how they can help us serve our community
  • There is one member looking for an Eagle Scout project and will contact our club

  • Started in 1979 and covers 5 counties – Ross, Pickaway, Pike, Fayette & Highland
  • A “Big” is a responsible and caring adult who is able and willing to invest in the life of a child
  • Required to meet an hour a week with contact throughout the month
  • A “Little” is a child between the ages of 7-14 who is facing adversity and would benefit from a positive and healthy relationship with a trusted adult
  • Community-based: match a Big and a Little. We want a match to last at least 18 months
  • School-based: currently 12 matches at New Hope. Supervised program with a Big (high school student) and Little (elemetary or middle school).
  • Ready to be matched: More kids than adults. 29 kids waiting. Erin and her staff put on various activities for these kids.
  • 166 youth being serviced in Ross, Pickaway, Pike, Fayette and Highland counties
  • Funding – government grants, PCCF, United Way, Fundraisers, Dance for Kids Sake, Bowl for Kids Sake (March 5th at Shawnee Lanes Noon-2pm. Teams of 5, $300)

  • There are still a few suitcases left, (which we donated last year)
  • Children’s services is a tough role, you have to have a passion for helping children from all backgrounds and circumstances
  • County law enforcement is the backbone of our agency, if we need them, they are there
  • We follow the screening guidelines by the state – all inquires are tracked, but investigations and cases need hard evidence and that is what takes time to gather
  • 42 children in foster homes locally
  • We do not have enough foster parents locally. Currently going to Mansfield which causes follow-up issues.
  • Everyone can help – Be a strong leader. Let kids see a role model because they might not have anyone else to look up to.
  • We are in the post COVID uptick in cases because there where not eyes on the kids. The school system spots trouble and can report it. When school was shut down, that was harmful for some kids.
  • Newborns to 17 year olds are taken care of by the agency
  • If child is born positive with fentanyl, automatic removal from home
  • Is there help for grandparents who have to take in the grandkids? Looking into programs to help with kinship placements. None currently.
  • Foster families are also helping the natural parents grow and are being the positive influence the parents need – the goal is reunification

  • Ross, Pickaway, Highland, Fayette counties are all under the direction of RPHF Solid Waste District
  • Recycling location off Morris Rd., Circleville is a constant battle to keep the trash from being discarded
  • Other area recycling options are Island Rd; Rumpke; PICCA; Rhoads
  • What we recycle is based on what we have a market to sell – it is different per county which leads to confusion
  • 2018 – China was a large source for our recycled material, then stopped because of trash that was included in the bales of recycling
  • Look at the stickers on the bins as to what can be recycled
  • Plastic film/bags should NOT go into the bins, they can be taken to Kroger/Walmart
  • If you bring your recycling in a bag, please take the bag home with you
  • Some sites do have camera’s and law enforcement will be given evidence of dumping
  • Fayette County Recycling Center is a new concept that is being replicated by other counties. It is a membership system, fenced with camera’s and key fobs for entry.
  • Greenhouse plastic’s ARE NOT recyclable in Ohio; McDonald’s cups ARE; Yogurt cups ARE; Solo cups ARE NOT
  • The numbers on the bottom of plastics are defining the resin used, not if they are recyclable or not anymore

  • District meeting is April 28-29 at Veterans Memorial in Columbus.

  • Thanks to the work of Mollie Hedges, the insight of Tim Colburn and Ty Ankrom, PAAC was founded in 2015
  • PAAC was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant in 2021 for $125,000 each year for 5 years
  • Working with school districts
  • Be the Change Youth Rally sponsored for 300 students
  • Training sessions for community – how to talk to kids about drugs, etc.

  • The chamber was founded in 1916. We currently have 301 members.
  • The chamber’s funding comes from members.
  • For chamber members, (through Central Ohio Chamber) there is medical insurance, workers comp. Insurance, shipping discounts, legal/HR consultations.
  • This year board is growing to 13 people. We are looking outside of Circleville since they are to serve the county
  • Annual events: April dinner is at Flora and Field; night golf outing in August (and have to be done before the sprinklers come on!); Christmas at Pumpkin Show Park (this year, over 800 people attended with 400 children)
  • Would like to start a Young Professionals club and women’s club for networking
  • Four ribbon cutting opportunities in the next few months
